App Innovation Challenge Results: Launched earlier this month, the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge received a total of 6,940 entries in eight categories until July 26, 2020.

Atmanirbhar Bharat is the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a self-reliant nation. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi first mentioned this vision in the form of the “AtmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan” form.

The announcement of this mission was made during the coronavirus pandemic relating to the economic package on 12 May 2020. The Finance Minister clarified that the mission does not aim to be protectionist in nature. “Self-reliant does not mean cutting off from the rest of the world”, states the Finance Minister.

Direct investment from foreign countries is welcome, technology is welcome. Self-reliant India implies being a bigger and more important part of the global economy.

Indian tech developers have received an enormous opportunity under this mission. The developers, entrepreneurs, and companies have got a chance to build for India at a bigger scale than anywhere in the world. They get to ensure that robust, stable, and secure apps are available not only for the Indians but also for the rest of the world.

For the 6,940 entries received, 3,939 came from individuals and the remaining 3,001 were from businesses and organizations. Around 1,757 of those obtained from individuals are ready for use and the remaining 2,182 are under development. By comparison, 1,742 apps have already been deployed from the applications submitted by organizations, and the remaining 1,259 are under development.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT also provided the category-wise break-up, which included 1,142 app entries submitted under Business, 901 in Health and Wellness. Further, 1,062 app entries in e-learning, 1,155 in social networking, 326 in games, 662 in office and work from home, 237 in news, and 320 in entertainment.

India is one of the top users of apps and the internet in the world. In the first quarter, India accounted for the 5 billion downloads out of the 33.6 billion app downloads in 2020. The app downloads in India have increased by 20.3% over last year.

The developers have to design and innovate apps as the categories give ample flexibility. For the complex apps requiring a larger timeframe, another challenging round will follow. The government expects the initiative will kickstart an App ecosystem. This will come with incentives for developers to dream and imagine innovative tech solutions.
