OpenAI: Elon Musk’s co-founded, AI company and research lab OpenAI, is commercializing a sophisticated text-generation tool which was earlier marked as too dangerous to release.
Last February (Feb 2019), OpenAI has developed a system that can produce fake text from one single line. But, OpenAI didn’t open-source the code in fear of misuse of the technology.
Now, the AI research lab is commercializing the tool, but only in private beta.

Last year, when trying the tool, The Guardian’s Alex Hern found the system could match the style and language of George Orwell’s novel “1984” as well as an article from The Guardian.
Hern fed the system with the first line of George Orwell’s 1984: “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
From this, the AI system, spun the following snippet of prose: “I was in my car on my way to a new job in Seattle. I put the gas in, put the key in, and then I let it run. I just imagined what the day would be like. A hundred years from now. In 2045, I was a teacher in some school in a poor part of rural China. I started with Chinese history and history of science.”
OpenAI said earlier that it would not open-source the software because of concerns that the technology was too dangerous and would be misused in generating fake reviews and comments.
That’s why the company is releasing it’s first commercial product, as an application programming interface (API). The company will be releasing the product in private beta rather than open-source code.

OpenAI in its blog post wrote, “The field’s pace of progress means that there are frequently surprising new applications of AI, both positive and negative. We will terminate API access for obviously harmful use-cases, such as harassment, spam, radicalization, or astroturfing. But we also know we can’t anticipate all of the possible consequences of this technology, so we are launching today in a private beta rather than general availability, building tools to help users better control the content of our API returns, and researching safety-relevant aspects of language technology (such as analyzing, mitigating, and intervening on the harmful bias.)”
Even though OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit organization, the company says it decided to launch a commercial product to make sure it has sufficient fundings. The ultimate goal of the company is to ensure that “artificial intelligence benefits everyone.”
In July 2019, OpenAI received an investment of $1 billion from Microsoft. It’s co-founder Elon Musk said last February, that due to his focus on Tesla and SpaceX, he had not been “closely involved” with OpenAI for over a year.
